The headline frames this as an image upgrade, but the more significant detail is architectural: OpenAI is now routing visual generation tasks through its reasoning stack, which means DALL-E is no longer a standalone model but a downstream output layer for chain-of-thought processing. That integration pattern, not the image quality improvement, is what has structural consequences.

This follows the same playbook OpenAI used with Codex in mid-April.
