Codex for (almost) everything

The feature expansion is inseparable from the organizational story: per Wired's coverage, Kevin Weil is leaving OpenAI after his AI science application was folded into Codex, meaning this product launch is also the public face of an internal consolidation that just cost the company a senior executive.

The Verge framed this update as 'a direct shot at Claude Code,' and that framing holds up when you stack it against the broader pattern. OpenAI shipped an updated Agents SDK on April 15th with native sandbox execution, then dropped this Codex expansion the following day, then announced the Cloudflare Agent Cloud integration on April 13th. These aren't isolated releases; they form a coordinated push to make Codex the default surface for agentic developer work before Anthropic can consolidate its own lead in that segment. The Weil departure adds friction to that story: consolidating products is faster when the org chart is cleaner, but losing an executive mid-push introduces execution risk that the feature list doesn't reflect.

Watch whether Anthropic responds with a Claude Code update that matches or exceeds the memory and computer-control features within the next 60 days. If it does, this is a feature race with no durable moat; if it doesn't, OpenAI's desktop integration head start may matter more than the individual capabilities do.
