Introducing the OpenAI Economic Research Exchange

The initiative positions OpenAI as both the subject of economic research and the primary supplier of the data underpinning it, a conflict of interest the announcement does not address. There is no mention of independent oversight, third-party data access, or what would happen if the findings reflected poorly on OpenAI's own products.

This sits in direct tension with the Florida lawsuit against OpenAI covered here in early June, where the core dispute is whether OpenAI has been sufficiently transparent about downstream harms. Launching a proprietary research exchange while simultaneously contesting liability claims in court raises an obvious question about whose interests the evidence-gathering actually serves. The Stargate infrastructure story from June 1 is also relevant context: OpenAI is simultaneously building the physical compute layer, deploying products at scale, and now proposing to measure the economic consequences of all of it. That is a lot of vertical integration over the narrative.

Watch whether any major academic economics department or government labor agency signs on as an independent partner with disclosed data-access terms within the next six months. If the exchange remains populated exclusively by OpenAI-affiliated researchers, the 'exchange' framing will not hold up to scrutiny.
