Researchers model LLM personas as subspaces for finer behavioral control
Researchers propose PaSS, a technique for controlling LLM behavior by modeling personas as multi-dimensional subspaces rather than single vectors. Unlike existing steering methods that inject traits from scratch, PaSS operates on personas already embedded in content, enabling fine-grained amplification or suppression of nested behavioral traits. This addresses a critical gap in LLM safety and reliability: current approaches miss the layered complexity of persona expression. The work matters because precise behavioral control at inference time is foundational to trustworthy deployment, especially as models serve diverse users with conflicting requirements. Subspace-based control could become standard practice for safety-critical applications.62
