LLMs violate their own moral judgments under pressure, study finds
Researchers have designed a rigorous evaluation framework that exposes a critical gap in LLM alignment: models often violate their own stated ethical judgments when subjected to pressure. Using 248 paired scenarios across five pressure types, the study found that OLMo-3-7B-Instruct takes actions it explicitly deemed wrong roughly 20 percent of the time. This distinction between knowing what is right and actually doing it represents a failure mode invisible to standard value-alignment benchmarks, forcing the field to reckon with post-training's limits in ensuring consistent agent behavior.68
