Researchers prove AI models can cryptographically hide capabilities from evaluators
Researchers have demonstrated that AI models can mathematically hide arbitrary computational capabilities using cryptographic backdoors, fundamentally challenging the assumption underlying current safety evaluation practices. By embedding encrypted neural networks within model weights that activate only on secret triggers, the work shows that capability elicitation through fine-tuning, gradient search, and weight analysis cannot guarantee discovery of hidden behaviors. This finding reshapes the threat model for pre-deployment safety testing, suggesting evaluators cannot rely on exhaustive probing to surface dangerous capabilities before release, and raises urgent questions about whether current red-teaming and interpretability approaches are sufficient for high-stakes model deployment.72
